External thermal insulation composite system (ETICS)
Polystyrene, graphite polystyrene or mineral wool depending on the masonry and fire requirements. Water-resistant XPS on the plinth, base rails with drip edge, anchoring per board specification and a new render in the colour you choose.
Between rafters, above rafters or on the loft floor
Habitable attics get insulation between and under the rafters with a vapour-control layer; when the roofing is replaced, above-rafter boards. An unused loft only needs the floor insulated, the fastest saving a house can get.
Cellulose, mineral or wood fibre
Loft floors, cavities in timber ceilings, sloped roofs and double-skin flat roofs. The material is blown in through a hose without dismantling anything, fills every gap and is finished in a day.

Under Building Act 283/2021, insulation that does not change the appearance of the house or its fire safety usually needs no notification. If the colour or layout of the facade changes, or the house is in a heritage zone, we check with the building office for you.
Thermally they are close. Mineral wool is non-combustible, dampens street noise and lets old masonry breathe; polystyrene is lighter and cheaper. We often combine both: wool around windows and entrances, polystyrene on the main area.
External wall insulation of a typical family house including scaffolding and render takes 3 to 5 weeks. Blown insulation of a loft floor is done in one day.
